don't forget to keep poet and speaker separate.

yes, very disturbing.
and what about the dark spaces inside anyone...everyone. maybe not so dark as this, but metaphorically, occassionally, close. ?? isn't close pretty bad?
who do you see in the mirror: the one you want to be, the one others see, or the one you are?
and what of our neighbors--brethren--do we ignore, ostracize, eliminate; or do we recognize, acknowledge, realize we must act...?

somehow we've come to a place where we need to confront this poem. bidart is putting it in front of us in an emotional, visceral way that forces our hand. hard as that might be.

i think that idea of when to let go of your child and let them experience things for themselves differs from parent to parent and child to child. it really depends on the personal experiences that are had

of course, a mirror is only a re-presentation of a thing. and to know that thing, through that one-dimensional representation in the mirror, requires yet another re-presentation: language. can you ever know yourself? how do you know you know yourself? isn't it always a struggle--tension between desire and perception?
or you could create yourself from all the representational tools.

Sylvia Plath was an amazing poet for the short time she was alive. What a shame that she did not go on to full life of well accredited writing! This poem, in particular, shows one of her great talents: the ability to suck a reader in to an alien point of view. Thanks for posting this!
